The difference between the country borders and cultural borders leads to political arguments all the time.
Although we don't think Russia is going into a war with Ukraine, it's good to know why Ukraine is a good pick for the US to stir trouble in this area. Not only it is the neighboring country of Russia, but the borders of Ukraine also cross over two cultural regions.
Hence, we can see that West Ukraine (Galicia) is looking to join NATO while East Ukraine (Donbas) hopes to get closer to Russia.
